Perfect is me.

After being interviewed about my ‘coming out’, I could not help but remember this little offering. I must have been around 7, I was watching Disney’s mediocre Oliver & Company (Oliver! with a doggy twist) and I was – presumably – bored out of my skin. That was until this:

Disney and Bette Midler may have been the first people to inadvertently comfort any personal prejudices I had with my sexuality when they conjured this unashamedly camp offering. Their Georgette introduced me of my future adoration of divas, showgirls and unbridled vanity (in others, of course). The number remains a joy to this day, although why she didn’t just turn those pesky birds into a wonderful boa is beyond me.

Time for the spin-off? Yes please! With Goldie Hawn voicing a rival dog diva. Like Chicago…but with dogs. Is Disney listening?

Mamma Mia!: The Funny Side.

Once upon a time a French & Saunders sketch would guarantee a flawless slice of high class entertainment and belly-laughs (who could forget their flawless interpretation of The Silence of the Lambs?). It seemed, however, that the comedic duo had lost their spark with their combined efforts becoming more and more unimpressive as the years passed. Enter their wonderful Mamma Mia! sketch presented at last Friday’s Comic Relief. It is so good that it easily charts among their greatest efforts (a compliment indeed!) and now also leads me to hope for a more promising future from the pair. Now take a seat and watch…here and here.

Justifty my love?

The new Britney Spears single, If U Seek Amy, can be seen here. It all seems very Justify My Love meets Hilly Duff/Miley Cryus. And what happened to Circus Britney?

Remember the old days when Britney would stick to one persona per album? Now it seems we are given one per music-video. That would seem excessive even for, the Queen of re-invention, Madonna. At least we can be thankful that Spears learnt from her elder’s mistake and has not returned to the big-screen.

I still fear that Britney has turned into a mechanical pop machine that will unavoidably rust, crash and burn (professionally) once we, the public, are through with her. Should we expect Wacko Jacko: The Britney Edition? Time will tell…

Confessions of a KST-aholic

Similiar to the titular character, I gave into my obsession and I need to confess. Although not a scratch on the detestible He’s Just Not That Into You (grr), Confessions of a Shopaholic is not without its countless number of flaws. One of which is the unforgivable underuse misuse of the above lady (I was going to go with Goddess, but then my obsession would be exposed). Still it remained a wholly entertaining experience thanks to a wonderfully charming leading lady and dreamy love interest. (Someone please give Isla Fisher some juicier roles!!!). An enjoyable – if somewhat guilty – experience.

Emiliana Torrini.

Apologies for my lack of posts these last few weeks. This was not due to a post-Oscar lull (the obvious conclusion) but a bout of thesis panic. Thankfully that is over…I hope.

Whether you’re a walking disaster (see: Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse) or a heavily produced ‘diva’ (see: Madonna, Katie Perry), female performers need some tabloid fodder to make it big. Emiliana Torrini has no such baggage, infact she may be one of the most unassuming, trivial yet completely charming performers around today. This startingly genuine personality shines unashamedly through in her music and her performances, winning her devoted fans wherever she plays. I listened, I fell and now I’m paying forward…

Quote.8

“It always fascinated me how people go from loving you madly to nothing at all, nothing. It hurts so much. When I feel someone is going to leave me, I have a tendency to break up first before I get to hear the whole thing. Here it is. One more, one less. Another wasted love story. I really love this one. When I think that its over, that I’ll never see him again like this… well yes, I’ll bump into him, we’ll meet our new boyfriend and girlfriend, act as if we had never been together, then we’ll slowly think of each other less and less until we forget each other completely. Almost. Always the same for me. Break up, break down. Drunk up, fool around. Meet one guy, then another, fuck around. Forget the one and only. Then after a few months of total emptiness start again to look for true love, desperately look everywhere and after two years of loneliness meet a new love and swear it is the one, until that one is gone as well. There’s a moment in life where you can’t recover any more from another break-up. And even if this person bugs you sixty percent of the time, well you still can’t live without him. And even if he wakes you up every day by sneezing right in your face, well you love his sneezes more than anyone else’s kisses.”
